Festival
The first record of a Saint Patrick's Day Festival within the Parish was in 1910 when the local community raised money for the newly built St Roch's Chapel, Presbytery and Primary School, which had a large percentage of Irish parishioners.
Since then this Annual Celebration has taken many forms. In 1998 the local Celtic Supporters Clubs held a street party to celebrate the winning of the Scottish Premier League by Glasgow Celtic. They repreated this when Garngad-Born Lisbon Lion, Stevie Chalmers, opened the second Championship Winning Street Party in 2000.
Since the founding of GIHG in 2005 The Festival has been run by GIHG.
The Festival is a Celebration of the Feast Day of Ireland's Principal Patron, Saint Patrick, and is a non-political, family-orientated, cultural event. The Festival has four parts:
1) Gaelic Mass of Peace and Thanksgiving, St Roch's Chapel, 10am.
2) Procession of Floats from Candleriggs to Garngad, 12noon - 1pm.
3) Address and Anthems, 1pm-1.30pm
3) Dance, Language & Literature, Music and Sport, 1.30pm - 4pm.
The Festival is attended by circa 5000 people and a variety of Irish groups participate in the four different parts.
